Piedmont Physicians General Surgery Athens specializes in comprehensive surgical care.
Breast Cancer remains our primary focus. In October 2014, we opened a High Risk Breast Cancer Clinic which serves and supports examination and screening of women who have a lifetime risk of developing breast cancer of 20% or greater as well as women who may be at risk for BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation. We have the ability to risk assess women felt to be at high risk for breast cancer right here in our office with a specialized program.
Our office has fixed openings in our weekly scheduled to allow expeditious appointments for women newly diagnosed with breast cancer.
Some insurance plans require a referral in order to see a specialist. If your insurance requires a referral, call the office, and we will be happy to assist you. Please allow 48 to 72 hours to process referrals to specialists.

Michael William Shotwell, MD

Dr. Shotwell earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia and completed a general surgery residency at Michigan State University. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. When he’s not working, Dr. Shotwell enjoys time with his family, hiking, and following UGA athletics.
