Donald R. Powell, DPM is a board-certified foot and ankle surgeon whose practice centers on the integration of biomechanics, sports medicine, and regenerative therapies, with surgical intervention reserved for cases in which it is clinically appropriate. He works primarily with active, health-conscious patients who value evidence-based care and a clear understanding of their diagnosis and treatment options.
Extensively trained in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, Dr. Powell approaches care with a strong preference for conservative and functional treatment whenever possible. His clinical philosophy emphasizes identifying the underlying cause of pain or dysfunction and restoring optimal movement, rather than defaulting to symptom-driven solutions. When surgery is recommended, it is done with the goal of achieving durable recovery and long-term function.
Dr. Powell grew up in the Savannah area and earned his undergraduate degree in Biology from Georgia Southern University before completing his doctorate at Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He completed his residency at DeKalb Medical Center (now Emory Decatur), where he received comprehensive training in both operative and non-operative management of complex foot and ankle conditions. In addition to his clinical practice, he previously served as Director of Podiatric Medical Education and remains involved in resident education as a member of the teaching and research faculty at The Podiatry Institute.
A central and defining focus of Dr. Powell's work is biomechanics and gait analysis. He has additional training through Gait Happens, MyFootFunction, and The Foot Collective, and is an RRCA Level 1-certified running coach. This background informs his functional, movement-based approach to conditions such as Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, overuse injuries, and sports-related foot and ankle pain. Regenerative treatments, including shockwave therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP), are incorporated when they align with the patient's diagnosis and goals.
Dr. Powell also treats common foot and ankle conditions including ingrown toenails, plantar warts, and acute foot and ankle fractures, providing timely procedural or surgical care when indicated.
An endurance runner and Ashtanga yoga practitioner, Dr. Powell brings a practical understanding of movement, load, recovery, and injury prevention to his clinical work. This perspective allows him to connect naturally with athletic and active patients while translating complex biomechanical concepts into clear, actionable treatment plans.
