He was awarded the Justin Potter Foundation Scholarship at Vanderbilt University, where he earned his M.D. in 1990. After that, Dr. Smith completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC. He also completed an orthopedic fellowship in adult reconstructive surgery from Harvard Medical School, studying with Dr. William H. Harris at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Smith travels to Haiti every year to donate his services to perform charity surgery at the Hospital Albert Schweitzer.
